Stevens county, which is north of Spokane has sent out tax notices telling some property owners that their taxes have increased. Some residents had an increase in property value of $10,000 while others had as much as a $300.000 value increase.

Stevens county defended their tax increase by saying that it was because they had not reassessed property values for 4 years and now it will be done annually. While this argument might have been successful in 2006, it doesn't work in a real estate market where values continue to decline.



My take on the situation.

Because of the "real estate bubble" counties were spending money based on an inflated market. Once the prices began to decrease, the counties budget still increased. So now many cities and counties have a deficit. Instead of trying to find ways to cut the budget, instead they try to justify a tax increase. Although your home's market value may be $150,000 it may be assessed at $200,000. $200,000 may be lower than it was back a few years ago, but is still being taxed higher than it should be. I believe that in tough economic times, the government should be finding ways to save money not trying to bite the hand that feeds it.
